No. Brazilians enter Chile with just an ID card, as long as it is in good condition, has a photo that allows clear identification and is not too old. The physical version is mandatory: the digital one is not accepted at immigration.
A passport also works, and some people prefer to carry one. It is worth checking current travel insurance requirements before flying.
When is the best time to visit Chile?
It depends what you are after, and that is the appeal of the country: every season delivers a different trip.
- Winter (June to September). Ski season. The resorts are an hour and a half from Santiago. This is when most Brazilians travel.
- Spring and autumn (October to December, March to May). The capital's best weather, comfortable vineyard visits and an uncrowded coast. March adds the grape harvest.
- Summer (December to March). Dry heat in Santiago, an enjoyable coast and the Cajón del Maipo with no closed roads. Note: in Atacama, January and February are the altiplanic winter, when rain can cancel excursions.
How much does a trip to Chile cost?
It varies widely by itinerary and season. As a reference, a winter trip based in Santiago with a day in the snow averages R$ 6,000 to R$ 9,700 per person for six days. An Atacama trip runs R$ 7,000 to R$ 12,000 per couple for five nights, excluding flights.
Atacama excursions, for instance, cost between R$ 200 and R$ 500 per person. Accommodation is always what moves the total most.

- Santiago and surroundings only: 4 to 5 days. The city, a winery, Valparaíso and, in winter, a day in the snow.
- Santiago + Atacama: 8 days. The most common combination, because the desert flight leaves from the capital.
- Chile end to end, adding Patagonia: 12 days or more.
What to do in Chile: the destinations Brazilians look for most
- Santiago. The base for almost every trip. Hills overlooking the Andes, neighbourhoods with real nightlife and the country's best food.
- Ski resorts near the capital. Valle Nevado, El Colorado, Farellones, La Parva and Portillo. The most accessible snow in South America for anyone coming from Brazil.
- Maipo Valley wineries. Tastings and tours less than an hour from Santiago.
- Valparaíso and Viña del Mar. The coloured hills, the funiculars and the beaches, as a day trip.
- Cajón del Maipo. Hot springs, mountains and the Embalse El Yeso.
- The Atacama Desert. The driest desert on earth, and one of the clearest skies on the planet.
Mistakes worth avoiding
- Going to Atacama in January without knowing about the altiplanic winter. It is the most expensive mistake in the country.
- Travelling in September without checking ski resort closing dates. Some close mid-month, others run into October.
- Bringing only a digital ID. It is not accepted.
- Underestimating the sun. In the mountains and the desert, radiation is far stronger than on the Brazilian coast.
