How much a trip to Atacama costs: the numbers broken down

A trip to Atacama costs, excluding flights, between R$ 7,000 and R$ 12,000 per couple for five nights, accommodation, excursions, food and extras included. The spread comes down to two things: the hotel and how many excursions you do. Here are the numbers broken out.

2026 reference figures, to give you an order of magnitude. Prices move with the season and the exchange rate, so confirm before committing:

• Accommodation: R$ 2,500 to R$ 4,000 for five nights, for a couple. The range is huge: from simple hostels to desert hotels with a pool and their own observatory. It is the item that moves the total most.
• Excursions: R$ 2,500 to R$ 4,500 for four or five trips, for two people.
• Food and extras: R$ 1,500 to R$ 2,500. A meal in San Pedro runs from R$ 50 to R$ 200 depending on the place.
• Calama to San Pedro transfer: R$ 60 to R$ 400, depending on whether it is shared or private.

How much cash to bring?

Less than most people assume: R$ 500 to R$ 1,000 in cash covers what genuinely needs physical money. San Pedro is a small town (not everywhere takes cards and the ATMs tend to have queues and withdrawal limits) but hotels and tour operators generally accept cards.

How to save without ruining the trip

• Go outside January and February. Besides being the altiplano rainy season, that is when everything costs most.
• Choose your excursions carefully. Four good trips deliver more than seven rushed ones, and cost less.
• Accommodation is where the biggest difference sits. A simple, well-located hotel in San Pedro frees up budget for the excursions, which is where the trip actually happens.
• Compare transfers. Shared costs a fraction of private, and the comfort gap over an hour and a half of good road is small.
• Watch the exchange. Bringing reais and changing them in San Pedro usually goes less far than arriving with pesos or using a card. Worth planning.

Is it worth it?

Atacama is not a cheap destination: it is a desert, everything arrives from far away and the tourist infrastructure is concentrated. But it is a trip that rarely disappoints, and the daily cost ends up similar to Bariloche in high season. The difference is that this landscape exists nowhere else on earth.
