Two rafting sections with very different grades, a minimum age that changes everything, and a kayak trip anyone can do on day one. A straight guide to Bariloche's water activities.
Summer in Bariloche is short and the water is cold year-round, which has never stopped water sports from being the second reason people come here outside the ski season. It pays to understand the differences before booking, because the two rafting options are not the same thing.
Classic Manso: the one that suits most people
The lower Manso section has class II and III rapids, with calm pools between them. This is the rafting that works for people who have never held a paddle, for families, and for groups where not everyone is keen. It takes about half a day including transfer and the safety briefing.
Manso to the Border: a different activity
This one runs 12 kilometres down to the Chilean border with class III and IV rapids. It is a full day, and the requirements change:
- Minimum age 14, not negotiable
- You must be able to swim, this is a requirement, not a suggestion
- Previous rafting experience is suggested, though not mandatory
Anyone expecting Classic Manso who books this one gets a shock. Anyone after adrenaline who books the classic comes away feeling they paid for a boat ride.
The season
Roughly September or October through April or May, depending on the operator and the river level. It does not run in mid-winter.
Kayaking
This is the most accessible water activity in Bariloche and the least advertised. Half-day paddles usually start from Bahía López or Lake Moreno and need no experience: the guide runs a short paddling and safety lesson before you get on the water. The difficulty is rated easy.
On full-day trips, 9am to 4pm, you paddle four to five hours with a lunch stop. You get to see Isla Centinela, where Perito Moreno's remains lie, and the wall of Cerro López from water level, a perspective no lookout gives you.
How to choose
- Never done any of this and travelling with family: Classic Manso or a half-day kayak
- After adrenaline, over 14 and able to swim: Manso to the Border
- After scenery and quiet rather than thrills: kayak, without question
